City-Link ties up with Japan's Sagawa Global

Jan 26, 08

LOCAL courier firm City-Link Express (M) Sdn Bhd expects revenue to grow by 10 per cent this year with its expansion into the Japanese market.

The firm, on an expansion drive to further strengthen its international network, will enter the country through its alliance with Japan's second largest courier and logistics provider Sagawa Global Logistics Co Ltd.

City-Link founder and chief executive officer David Tan Ah Ba said the partnership with Sagawa will enable the firm to win a bigger share of the Japanese market.

"The tie-up will enable us to provide full services to all cities in Japan and in turn, Sagawa will benefit from our wide network in Malaysia and other countries for its services," he said.

He noted that City-Link recorded a revenue of around RM95 million last year.

Tan said as a result of the partnership, the number of shipments to Japan is likely to grow by fourfold from only 22,000 pieces a month.

At the network agreement signing ceremony in Shah Alam, Selangor, yesterday, Sagawa Global was represented by its director Hirofumi Ishihara while Tan signed on behalf of City-Link.

Meanwhile, City-Link deputy chief executive officer Ng Chet Chiang said the firm will continue to expand its network by forming partnerships with international companies around the world.

"In fact, we are currently in final talks with a company from Europe and hope to conclude the deal with them by March 2008," he said.

He said the firm's strategy so far in expanding its network has been to establish agents and forming joint-venture agreements with counterparts in different countries.

City-Link has more than 110 express and drop-in centres throughout the country and also has offices in Singapore, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

Strategic alliances have also been established in joint ventures with Indonesia, Philippines, India, Pakistan, Myanmar, South Korea, Brunei, Australia and the US.
